How to Spec a Gantry - The REID Lifting way

Finding the perfect gantry

We have produced a guide to help our customers to specify the perfect PORTA GANTRY for your lifting and lowering needs. The guide shows exactly how to match the gantry to the project to get the optimum performance and maximum return on investment.

Our user-friendly guide starts with advice on choosing and customising the A-frame, based on the working load limit (WLL) and minimum and maximum height required. It also points out what you need to take into account not just the weight of the item you are planning to lift but also how much space and clearance you will have around the gantry and the ground conditions which you are likely to encounter.

Easy reference tables are included which show exactly which A-frame to select based on the load and size and how to differentiate between frames with assisted or manual height adjustment, as well as how to customise with accessories like castors and lobed cheek plates as required.

It then moves on to the next stage which is ordering the beam and points out that these are interchangeable so you can potentially order a pair of A-frames and several beams to create your own cost-effective modular lifting system.

Beam choice for any PORTA GANTRY is based on capacity and length, with options from 2500mm to 9000mm and capacity from 500kg to 5000kg.

Like the A-frame, the right beam will depend on the weight of the item being lifted and the space and operating span available, as well as how much any item needs to be moved along the beam, and the size and availability of transport.

Key to getting the specification right is the level of beam deflection which will happen when the gantry is under load and the our guide shows how you can reduce the amount of beam deflection by ordering the required length in a heavier section or by pairing a higher capacity beam with a lower capacity. Again, there is a reference table included which shows exactly how to get that combination correct.

Finally, the guide covers trolleys and directs you through the master link, gated, close coupled, gear driven and integrated options based on beam section, capacity, and any requirement for fall protection.

We hope that this guide will demystify the specification process and make it quicker and easier to order exactly what you need.

This is a REID initiative, but the principles hold true for virtually any portable PORTA GANTRY. We want users to get the best possible return on their investment and, in the case of hire companies and resellers, have the tools they need to make their job that little bit easier.
